Nobody’s complaining about the Afghanistan war. It was completely justified, and the Afghani people today are better off because of it. The Taliban regime in Afghanistan was directly responsible for a horrible attack on the US territory (9/11 offcourse), and the destruction of the regime was necessary to remove a direct threat to US. But the Taliban would still be in power if they didnt mess with US, and if they messed with it while CLinton was in power, who knows what would happen. I dont think Americans shouldnt ever go to war outside their territory. After all, you did save our asses in WW2. But there are so many oppressive regimes that you dont do anything about, and some even had your support (Pinochet for example). What about the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia? They killed 1.5 milion of their own people, and in the end your enemies the North Vietnamese took them down. Their leader Pol Pot died peacefully years after, without ever being on trial. And weren’t Saddam’s worst attrocities commited in the early 80’s while he had full support of the US because he was fighting Iran?

You’re probably talking about the Srebrenica massacre. First, the number is wrong. The official estimate is at 8,000 people killed. Second, the massacre was not USA’s fault. USA did not establish or maintain the safe zone. The safe zone was guarded by Dutch troops, and it was Dutch troops that gave the city away without a fight (the officers were later even given medals, go figure…). The only fault that USA could possibly have for Bosnian casualties is responding too late in the Balcan conflict. But that responsibility is shared with the entire international community.

The thing of it is, if we can blame Iraqi deaths on GWB’s “lies”, then we can do the same here with Clinton. That was the point.

I’m Croatian. My country borders with Bosnia, and we were the first ones attacked by Serbia back in 1991. There are 3 things to consider when talking about US involvment in the Balcans. First we can talk abot it’s role in Croatia and Bosnia, where they were a part of the peace keeping forces. Offcourse, they didn’t keep the peace too good, but like i said it’s not USA’s fault alone. But Clinton had a big role in the Dayton Agreement. It ended the war but was flawed and causes problems even today

Second, the Kosovo conflict. The whole bombing campaign was a completely wrong reaction to a conflict that was much much less bloody than Bosnia. It should have happened much earlier and would have saved many lives. Better late then never is not a good justification here. But oh yes, it got USA public’s attention away from Bill’s Oral Office adventures. By the way, im not aware of a connection between Kosovo and 911. But i’m interested to hear it, Fly.

Sorry for such a late reply, Fly. I dont visit these pages often. But on this beautifull saturday night I’m home with a fever, so why not keep this thread alive.
Anyway, nothing new for me in that article you linked, and most of it is true. To be honest, i expected a paranoid “Kosovo caused 911” article, but it’s not it. But you have to understand that the problem with Bosnian muslims is not about Bosnians. Bosnians muslims are not radical in any way. They are not Arabs. They are simply Croats and Serbs that converted to Islam during the times that Bosnia was a part of the Ottoman empire.Even though 1/3 of Bosnian population are muslims, they dont have a history of radical islamism of any sort. But, during the Balcan wars, many fighters from all over the muslim world came to Bosnia to fight on their side. They were welcomed becouse they were fanatical fighters. After the war some of them stayed. And the fact that one of the Madrid bombers was born in Bosnia is purely coincidential, and there was no reason to label Bosnia as a terrorist hotspot because of it.
Kosovo on the other hand is different. I am not sure most Americans understand why Kosovo is so problematic. Serbs have a reason not to let that region go, and it’s because it is theirs. Historicaly, it always was. But slowly during the years, the Albanian population in Kosovo outbred the Serb population until Serbs became a minority in the region. So Serbs struggled to keep control of the area against Albanians, who are not really that nice people. In a way, they did present themselves as the (only) victims and gained support of the international comunity.
Now Kosovo faces independance, and I am not sure it should get it. Kosovo independance could set up a dangerous precedent. If it gets it, a region of any country could than want independance if an ethnic minority makes a majority in that region. Imagine parts of Los Angeles demanding independance because Mexicans make a majority there (and I’m sure there are such parts with more people than entire Kosovo).

Thank you Suma for the enlightened response. It is fascinating to hear from someone who is there and knows more than we can dig up thru the various news agencys. We have a faction in Los Angeles and the Desert Southwest called “la Raza” or “the race” that would indeed take the land by force. Something we have to deal with.

Anyway, if you are interested in the history of the Balcans conflict, i recommand seeing BBC’s documentary called “Death of Yugoslavia”. It’s really interesting, more intense than any of the recent Holywood’s political thrillers.
